This October, The Nations Trades Its Creek for Its Street

  • October 8, 2026

For the rest of 2026, the shared outdoor space in The Nations will mostly be pavement. Metro Parks is closing the Richland Creek Greenway boardwalk between Colorado Avenue and the 51st Avenue area on October 11 for a full replacement. Six days later, Light the Nations takes over 51st Avenue for its tenth year. The month then ends back on 51st with a Halloween bar crawl.

These events aren't connected, and nobody planned them together. Still, they all push the same way. While the creek trail is fenced off, the neighborhood's walkable public life shifts onto its streets, and two of those streets have more going on this fall than they did in the spring.

The boardwalk goes dark until the new year

The Metro Parks notice is short. The boardwalk from Colorado Avenue to the 51st Avenue area closes starting October 11 and should stay closed for about 11 to 14 weeks. Counting from October 11, that means a reopening sometime between late December and mid-January 2027, depending on which end of the estimate holds.

This isn't the only closure on the Richland Creek Greenway this season. The trailhead and parking lot at 22 White Bridge Road, next to the NES substation, have been closed for construction since August 10 and are scheduled to stay closed through November 6. A shorter repair closure near the Knob Road trailhead ran August 24 through 28. Taken together, the trail has been broken up in pieces since late summer, and the boardwalk replacement is the longest piece so far.

Metro's notice doesn't say why the boardwalk is being replaced, how the work is funded, or what detour to use. The rest of the system still works for loop walkers. Greenways for Nashville describes the McCabe Park section as a 4.1-mile route around the golf course, with access points from the neighborhood, the community center, and connectors to the shopping center. Metro hasn't named it as a detour. It's simply what remains of the greenway south of the closure.

North of the closure, the street grid is the nearest alternative, and in October that grid has a festival on it.

Light the Nations closes 51st for a day

Light the Nations started in 2016, which makes the 2026 edition its tenth. It runs Saturday, October 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on 51st Avenue between Georgia and Michigan avenues, and Good Neighbor Festivals is the host. The organizer expects more than 60 vendors, including local nonprofits, artisans, food vendors, and sponsors.

The lineup is spread across three blocks, so the festival covers more ground than the main stage alone:

  • Georgia Avenue main stage: Chrysalis, Josh Riley, Penny Lame, Spencer Ford, and Rei Kimura.
  • Michigan Avenue stage: Pranav McCabe, Kazmyn, Bach To Rock, and YEAH! Local Legends.
  • Illinois Avenue performance area: Bellevue Performing Arts Center at 12:40 p.m., Chinese Arts Alliance at 1:40 p.m., and dance in bloom at 2:40 p.m.

The street rules, if you live inside the footprint

For anyone living near 51st, the road-closure letter matters more than the music schedule. The festival's posted plan is:

  1. 51st Avenue between Georgia and Michigan is closed from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  2. Illinois Avenue between 52nd and 51st, and between 51st and 49th, is open to local traffic only.
  3. Indiana Avenue from 52nd to 51st, and from 51st to 50th, is open to local traffic only.
  4. Parking is not allowed on the southbound side of 49th Avenue between Indiana and Michigan from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Vehicles left there will be ticketed and towed.

Sound checks run from 8 to 10 a.m. that morning, so the street gets loud before the gates open. The suggested detours are Michigan or Georgia going west, Alabama or Michigan going east, and 49th or 52nd going north or south. Residents and businesses who need to get through the closures are asked to carry the festival's letter. Questions about access go to Katie Hollingsworth at Good Neighbor Festivals, and questions about the closures themselves go to Cody Baker at Metro. The festival FAQ sends visitors to side-street parking and recommends rideshare. It lists no shuttle.

The run before the festival

The Nations Neighborhood Association calls the 3rd Annual Firefly 5K the official kickoff for Light the Nations. The 1-mile fun run starts at 9 a.m. and the 5K at 9:30 a.m. The 5K course stays open until 10:30 a.m., so runners finish right as the festival opens. Both races start and finish on 51st Avenue North between Michigan and Kentucky avenues, just north of the festival. The course is listed at 3.14 miles with 109 feet of elevation gain. The race page encourages residents to walk, jog, or bike to the start and says the festival restrooms are on Indiana Avenue.

So on October 17, a 3.14-mile course on neighborhood streets stands in for an outdoor morning that might otherwise happen on the creek trail. With the boardwalk closed, it may be the longest organized route through the neighborhood this month.

Centennial Boulevard has new places to go

Once the festival is packed up, everyday foot traffic moves to Centennial Boulevard, which has changed since spring.

The largest change is at 5012 Centennial Blvd. Knoxville's Xul Beer Company bought Southern Grist Brewing Co. in February 2026. For several months it kept pouring at both Southern Grist taprooms in Nashville. Then it closed The Nations location from July 20 through August 7 for a full renovation. WBIR reported that Xul kept nearly all of Southern Grist's staff and still serves Southern Grist beer alongside its own. The taproom reopened on August 7. Xul co-founder Brad West, who opened the original Knoxville location in 2020, explained the redesign this way:

"Going from a super bright tap room and the teal colors to our darker, moodier vibe is just, you know, something that we're happy to finally kind of give this space a Xul feel."

West told WBIR the team "couldn't just paint over it" and needed "a different look and feel." Its fall calendar is already filling in, with Horror Movie Trivia on October 5 and a PB&J Mixtape Orange Marmalade & Blueberry can release on October 10. A darker, moodier room makes sense for the season, as evenings get shorter and the creek trail is closed.

A few blocks down at 5300 Centennial Blvd., Suite C3, Uni Uni Boba is new. City Cast Nashville included it in its September 2026 roundup of openings and mentioned sweets and popcorn chicken on the menu. Farther south, 6AM City lists 51st Deli at 7104 Charlotte Pike among its September openings. Owner Carim Yafai first aimed to open that location in May 2025, so it's worth calling ahead to confirm it's open before making the trip.

The Saturday standby, and the last night on 51st

One weekly event stays on its usual schedule this fall. The Richland Park Farmers Market runs every Saturday, rain or shine, from 9 a.m. to noon at 4711 Charlotte Avenue through December, with more than 80 vendors during peak season. The market and Light the Nations overlap on October 17, so a morning could start at the 5K, move to Charlotte Avenue before noon, and end back on 51st before the main stage wraps up at 4.

The month ends where the festival was held. The Nations Neighborhood Association's Drink-or-Treat Halloween bar crawl runs along the 51st Avenue corridor on Saturday, October 31. As of this writing, the association lists participating businesses as "coming soon."

When the boardwalk reopens around the turn of the year, the creek trail will be back. Until then, the busiest public stretches in The Nations are 51st between Georgia and Michigan and the Centennial Boulevard block shared by Xul and Uni Uni.

How a house works with the streets around it, including porches that face a festival block, garages that open onto side streets, and walking distance to Centennial, is something Stephanie Lowe considers on every infill project in The Nations and Charlotte Park. If you're thinking about building, renovating, or selling a few blocks off 51st, schedule a consultation and we'll go over the details of your street together.
